Overview

The Yamaha CR-640 is a late-1970s Natural Sound stereo receiver rated at 40 watts per channel into 8 ohms. Introduced for the 1979 model year, it sat in the middle of Yamaha’s receiver range and combined clean industrial design with the company’s unusually thoughtful approach to everyday controls.

Why This Model Matters

Yamaha’s CR-series receivers developed a strong reputation for understated styling, capable tuners, and a clear, balanced presentation. The CR-640 is a particularly representative example. A contemporary High Fidelity review described it as a lower-priced receiver that delivered more than its market position suggested, while laboratory testing confirmed its solid performance and useful feature set.

The front panel is arranged in three visual levels, separating the tuning display, frequently used controls, and secondary functions. Yamaha’s continuously variable loudness control is another defining feature. Instead of applying a fixed bass-and-treble boost, it lets the listener reduce volume while progressively compensating for the ear’s lower sensitivity to frequency extremes at quiet listening levels.

Highlights

  • 40 watts per channel into 8 ohms from 20 Hz to 20 kHz
  • FM/AM tuner with signal-strength and center-tuning meters
  • Continuously variable loudness control
  • Phono, auxiliary, and two tape connections
  • Two-speaker-pair switching
  • Distinctive brushed-aluminum face and three-tier control layout

Who It’s For

The CR-640 is a strong choice for someone building a practical vintage system rather than chasing maximum wattage. Its moderate power, flexible inputs, and straightforward controls make it well suited to efficient bookshelf or floorstanding speakers, vinyl playback, and everyday two-channel listening.
