Overview

The Technics SE-A5 is a substantial stereo power amplifier introduced around 1980 as part of the company’s upper-level separates range. Rated at 120 watts per channel into 8 ohms, it paired serious output capability with the bold visual language of early-1980s Technics: a black front panel, large illuminated power meters, and a solid 40-pound chassis.

The SE-A5 uses Technics’ linear-feedback circuit approach, developed to maintain low distortion across a wide frequency range rather than relying only on large amounts of conventional global feedback. Its published specifications include 0.002% total harmonic distortion, a damping factor of 140, and a signal-to-noise ratio of 123 dB. Two pairs of speakers can be connected and selected from the front panel.

Why This Model Matters

The SE-A5 sits in an appealing position within Technics history. It inherited design ideas and styling cues from the much more ambitious SE-A1 and SE-A3 while remaining more attainable and practical for a domestic system.
