Pioneer
Pioneer C-91
Pioneer C-91
Overview
The Pioneer C-91 is a late-1980s Elite-series stereo control amplifier, the North American counterpart to the Pioneer C-90. Designed to partner with power amplifiers such as the M-91, it represents Pioneer at its most ambitious: a large, heavily built preamplifier with unusually broad source control, separate attention to audio and video circuitry, and a genuinely capable phono section.
Why This Model Matters
The C-91 arrived when high-end Japanese manufacturers were applying serious engineering to separates rather than reserving their best work for receivers. Its internal layout uses extensive shielding and multiple power-supply sections, while the audio path follows a dual-mono philosophy intended to improve channel separation and reduce interference. The result is not a minimalist preamp, but a sophisticated control center built for complex late-1980s systems.
Its phono stage is one of the model’s most interesting features. The C-91 supports both moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges, with selectable MC loading, giving vinyl listeners flexibility that many modern line-stage preamps omit entirely. It also provides abundant tape, line, adaptor, and A/V connections, making it especially useful for collectors running multiple source components.
Highlights
- Elite-series stereo preamplifier from the late 1980s
- Dual-mono-oriented construction with multiple power-supply sections
- MM and MC phono inputs with selectable moving-coil impedance
- Extensive line, tape, adaptor, and audio/video source routing
- High-output design suited to matching power amplifiers
Who It’s For
The C-91 is ideal for listeners assembling a serious Pioneer Elite stack, vinyl enthusiasts who need a flexible built-in phono stage, or collectors who appreciate the feature-rich engineering of Japan’s late-1980s separates. It is one of Pioneer’s more formidable control amplifiers from the era and a natural centerpiece for a system built around vintage source components.
