Nad 118

Overview

The NAD 118 is a digital preamplifier introduced in the mid-1990s, when high-quality digital sources were becoming central to serious hi-fi systems. Unlike a conventional analog line-stage, the 118 converts its analog inputs to digital and performs volume control and signal processing in the digital domain.

It provides four analog inputs and four coaxial S/PDIF digital inputs, along with analog and digital tape loops. Internally, analog signals pass through an 18-bit A/D converter, processing is handled by a 24-bit Motorola DSP, and the analog outputs are fed by a 20-bit Philips digital-to-analog converter.

Why This Model Matters

The 118 is one of NAD’s more unusual components. NAD was best known for straightforward, value-oriented analog amplifiers, yet this model explored a very different approach: bringing multiple digital sources together under one control center while still accommodating conventional analog equipment.

That design places it squarely in the transitional era between CD’s early dominance and the later arrival of modern digital preamps and streaming hubs. Its architecture now feels historically significant because many of the ideas it explored—digital-domain volume control, integrated conversion, and centralized source management—became common decades later.
