Hitachi HA-4500
Hitachi HA-4500
Overview
The Hitachi HA-4500 is a late-1970s stereo integrated amplifier that combines solid everyday power with one of the era’s most recognizable display features: a wide 24-LED output meter across the front panel. Manufactured around 1978–1981, it reflects Hitachi’s serious participation in the competitive Japanese hi-fi market beyond the company’s better-known televisions and industrial electronics.
The HA-4500 is rated at 43 watts per channel into 8 ohms, with total harmonic distortion specified at 0.05%. It provides a moving-magnet phono input, tuner and auxiliary inputs, two tape loops, two sets of speaker outputs, a headphone jack, bass and treble controls, loudness compensation, and a low filter.
Why This Model Matters
Hitachi amplifiers from this period are often overshadowed by Pioneer, Sansui, and Marantz, but models such as the HA-4500 demonstrate that the company was building well-equipped, competitively specified components. Its power rating is enough for many vintage and modern speakers, while the dual tape facilities and speaker switching make it unusually flexible for a mid-powered integrated amplifier.
The LED power display also places the HA-4500 squarely in the transition from traditional analog meters to the illuminated electronic displays that became increasingly common around 1980. It gives the amplifier a distinctive appearance without turning the front panel into a novelty.

Who It’s For
