Overview
The Harman Kardon Citation Eleven is a full-function solid-state stereo preamplifier and audio equalizer from the early 1970s. Built as the control center for a serious component system, it combines generous source switching with one of the model’s defining features: a five-band program equalizer.
Why This Model Matters
Harman Kardon’s Citation line represented the company’s more ambitious high-fidelity equipment, and the Citation Eleven reflects that philosophy in both its circuitry and its unusually flexible front panel. Rather than limiting the listener to conventional bass and treble controls, Harman Kardon provided equalization at 60 Hz, 320 Hz, 1 kHz, 5 kHz, and 12 kHz. The equalizer can also be bypassed for a direct signal path.
The input arrangement is equally substantial. The Citation Eleven provides two magnetic-phono inputs, two auxiliary inputs, a tuner input, and two tape-monitor loops. High- and low-frequency filters, multiple operating modes, and speaker selection add the sort of system control that was expected from an upper-tier preamplifier of the period.
Its broad published frequency response and low stated distortion were consistent with Harman Kardon’s long-standing interest in wide-bandwidth amplifier design. Today, the Citation Eleven remains one of the most recognizable Citation components, thanks to its bank of equalizer sliders, purposeful layout, and combination of technical seriousness with distinctly 1970s styling.

Who It’s For
The Citation Eleven suits a listener building a substantial vintage separates system, especially one with multiple analog sources or a need for hands-on tonal adjustment. It offers far more control than a minimalist preamp while retaining the engineering character that made the Citation name important.
