Denon
Denon POA5000
Denon POA5000
Overview
The Denon POA-5000 is a six-channel surround power amplifier introduced in 1992, built to partner with high-end home-theater processors such as Denon's AVP-5000. It is a substantial component weighing roughly 24.2 kg, with independent amplification for front, center, and rear speaker pairs.
In standard multichannel operation, the front channels are rated at 100 watts each into 8 ohms, while the center and rear channels are rated at 50 watts each. Channel pairs can also be bridged for higher-power mono operation, allowing the amplifier to be configured for three-, four-, five-, or six-channel systems.
Why This Model Matters
The POA-5000 comes from the first generation of genuinely ambitious consumer surround separates. Rather than treating the center and rear channels as an afterthought, Denon built a large, flexible chassis with independent power sections and substantial current capability. Its architecture reflects the pre-Dolby Digital era, when premium processors decoded analog surround formats and relied on external multichannel amplification.
Highlights
- Six independent amplifier channels
- 100 watts per front channel into 8 ohms
- 50 watts per center and rear channel into 8 ohms
- Bridgeable channel pairs for higher-power mono use
- Wide 1 Hz to 100 kHz published frequency response
- Heavy 24.2 kg construction
Who It's For
Best suited to collectors of early high-end home theater, Denon separates, or anyone building a flexible analog multichannel system. It can also be repurposed creatively in bi-amped or multi-room installations, provided its unusual channel layout and power ratings fit the system.
