Overview

The Cambridge Audio Alva Solo is a compact phono preamplifier for moving magnet cartridges. It raises the low-level signal from a turntable and applies RIAA equalisation so a record player can connect to any line-level input, even on amplifiers with no dedicated phono stage.

Why This Model Matters

A good external phono stage is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve vinyl playback, and the Solo is Cambridge Audio's most affordable entry into its Alva range. It is built around the same priorities as the step-up Duo—low noise and a faithful signal path—using a switch-mode power supply that operates outside the audible band to cut hum, plus a subsonic filter and a surface-mount board layout to keep the signal clean.

In keeping with Cambridge Audio's "Great British Sound" approach, it aims to add nothing of its own to the recording. On release it drew praise from the hi-fi press, with Stereo describing it as "a finely honed phono pre-amp." For a system built around a moving magnet cartridge, it delivers the essentials without unnecessary extras.

Highlights

  • Phono preamplifier for moving magnet cartridges
  • Accurate RIAA equalisation (±0.65 dB, 30 Hz–20 kHz)
  • Switch-mode power supply to reduce hum
  • Subsonic filter to eliminate motor rumble
  • RCA output with auto power-down and under 0.5 W standby
  • Compact half-width chassis

Who It's For

The Alva Solo is for vinyl listeners who need to connect a moving magnet turntable to an amplifier or powered speakers without a phono input, and who want a clean, no-frills upgrade over a basic built-in stage. It is an easy first step into better vinyl sound.
