Bose
Bose 901 Equalizer series IV
Bose 901 Equalizer series IV
Overview
The Bose 901 Series IV Active Equalizer is the dedicated signal-processing component supplied with Bose 901 Series IV loudspeakers. It is not a conventional graphic equalizer and was never intended as a general tone-control accessory. Instead, it applies the specific frequency contour required by the 901 speaker system's nine-driver Direct/Reflecting design.
The equalizer is normally connected through a receiver's tape-monitor loop or between a separate preamplifier and power amplifier. Because the Series IV speakers depend on this tailored equalization, using them without the correct unit produces an inaccurate tonal balance. Bose also cautioned that equalizers from later 901 generations are not interchangeable with Series I through IV systems because their equalization curves differ substantially.
Why This Model Matters
The active equalizer is fundamental to the Bose 901 concept. Rather than relying on a conventional passive crossover and enclosure tuning alone, Bose treated the loudspeaker and equalizer as a complete system. That approach helped make the 901 one of the most recognizable and debated loudspeakers in American audio history.
Highlights
- Designed specifically for Bose 901 Series IV speakers
- Provides essential model-specific frequency shaping
- Connects through a tape-monitor loop or preamp/power-amp insert
- Not interchangeable with the Series VI equalizer
- Important replacement component for restoring a complete 901 system
Who It's For
Essential for owners assembling or restoring a Bose 901 Series IV speaker system. It should not be used as a general-purpose equalizer with conventional speakers, since its strong corrective curve is designed around the 901's unique acoustic behavior.
