Ampex
Ampex 402
Ampex 402
Overview
The Ampex 402 is not a conventional standalone home-audio preamplifier. It is tube-based recording and playback electronics associated with Ampex’s professional 402 stereophonic reel-to-reel recorder/reproducer system.
Why This Model Matters
Ampex was one of the defining companies of postwar magnetic recording. Its machines helped transform broadcasting, studio production, and recorded music, and the 400-series equipment belongs to that professional lineage. The 402 system was engineered as a high-quality stereophonic recorder/reproducer rather than a consumer tape deck, with separate tube electronics handling microphone or line amplification, recording, equalization, and playback.
Because these electronics can resemble a standalone preamplifier when separated from the tape transport, surviving units are sometimes described too broadly as “Ampex preamps.” That description captures only part of their purpose. They were designed first as functional modules within a professional tape machine, and their value today comes from that recording heritage, tube circuitry, industrial construction, and potential interest to restoration specialists or studio-equipment collectors.
Some enthusiasts adapt vintage Ampex electronics for microphone or line-level use, but any such conversion requires informed technical work. Original circuitry, connectors, power requirements, equalization, and condition vary, and decades-old professional tube equipment should be evaluated before use.

Who It’s For
This component is best suited to Ampex collectors, tape-machine restorers, tube-audio technicians, and studio-history enthusiasts. It should be approached as specialized professional recorder electronics—not as a plug-and-play modern preamplifier.
